WHY WISH? WHEN YOU CAN PRAY?

Have you ever eaten at a Chinese restaurant that has a wishing well?  We ate at one today, and I got to thinking about it – why do Chinese restaurants have wishing wells in them???  Have you ever wondered?  I’ve given my grandson pennies to throw in one before because the proceeds are usually given to a good cause, and it’s fun!  But why are they there?  So…..I did a little research and….I still don’t know the connection, but…..  I did discover that in ancient times, it was rare to find water that was pure enough to drink.  When found, it was attributed as a present from the gods.  So people began making wishes and leaving gifts, such as food, beads, or coins to “sweeten the deal”, for the gods, hoping to make sure their wish was heard.

As Christians, oh, how blessed we are that we don’t have to “wonder” if God is really “there!”  Proverbs 15:3 says, “The eyes of the Lord are on every place, watching the good and the evil.”  He is a spirit, and He is watching us, and He is with us.  We are never alone.  How awesome is this!

We are also so blessed with the avenue of prayer.  “Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).  We can confidently go to Him in prayer, knowing that Jesus “makes intercession for us” (Hebrews 7:25).

So, next time you see a wishing well – Consider saying a prayer instead.  He’s waiting.  God Bless, Courtney
