On our trip last week, we met some dear friends Dave and Debbie from Michigan who introduced us to a new card game, Euchre. Well, evidently, it’s not new, since according to Wikipedia (you know, it MUST be true!), the game was invented in the 1860’s. We’d just never heard of it! Maybe it’s a “northern thing?” There are rules online and even apps where you can play it on your phone! Who knew? Anyway, we had a ball playing this card game that only uses the cards nines, tens, jacks, queens, kings, and aces. The jacks, of all things, are the top trumps. After that, it goes ace, king, queen. . . in the chosen suite. You get the idea. You only get dealt five cards. The last thing you want is to pick up a hand of nines and tens!
We usually think of “ten” as the “perfect” number – not in Euchre! Athletes used to shoot for that perfect score. We’re always interested in seeing who or what made the “Top Ten List.” I mean – I’d LOVE to wear a size 10! Wouldn’t you? But what’s perfect to man isn’t what’s perfect to God. I Samuel 16:7 says, ” . . . for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” Are you bogged down thinking that you have to be “perfect” before God will forgive you? Maybe you already are “perfect” in God’s eyes. He doesn’t see things like we see them.
You know, now that I’m thinking about it – maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to be a “ten” in euchre. At least I’m in the game! Think of the threes and fours! God Bless, Courtney
