Which Road Would You Take?

I recently took a new job in Poplar Bluff. It’s about a 25-30 minute drive. I really don’t mind it – I do a lot of praying and singing during that drive time. I tell Steve that I’m a “nicer person” by the time I get home! My new job is downtown and there are two ways to get there. About half way there – a decision has to be made. Which road do I take? One is the “high road.” It’s the “normal” way to Poplar Bluff – you go up the ramp and take the new 4-lane road which has a 65 mile an hour speed limit, get off and go through several turns to get there or you can go straight, maintaining the 55 mile an hour speed through the country. You have only one turn, but you do have to slow down to 40 through a small town, you might get stopped by a train, and you might have to “yield” when meeting someone at the one lane bridge. It’s been known to happen.

Which road do I take? Well, I’ve made several discoveries – mostly about myself. If I take the “high road,” I can go faster, but there’s a lot more traffic. Everyone seems to be in such a hurry. I find myself getting “ticked” if I get behind someone and have to take it off cruise. I feel like I’m in a “rat race!” On the low road, the speed may be slower, but I like it so much more. So what if I get stopped by the train? It gives me time to enjoy my morning coffee! I’ve enjoyed seeing farmers out working in their fields. I’ve seen lots of rabbits and turtles. I find that my blood pressure is better when I take the “low road.”

This reminds me of how Jesus described the way to heaven. He said, “Enter ye in at the straight gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat. But strait is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth into life, and few there be that find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14) Yep, there are many people up on that wide four land road, but I think I’ll take the two lane through the country.
