The Button

I’ve got a few hours “home alone” tonight and I’d thought I’d get some of those “little tasks” that I’ve been meaning to do – done. Things like washing the bath mats, bathing the dog, and sewing a button on one of Steve’s favorite new shirts. As I sat here sewing, I got to thinking how people are much like that button.

It didn’t matter that this shirt was new and had only been worn a couple of times – a button still came loose. It doesn’t matter whether we’ve been a Christian for fifty year or five years or five months – we all stand the chance of separating from God. “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” (Roman 3:23) “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” (I Corinthians 10:12) Yes, it can happen to any of us.

Another thing about sewing on a button is that each time you thread the needle through the hole, it becomes more secure. The closer we “draw nigh unto God, He will draw nigh unto us.” (James 4:8) Have you heard of the saying, “If you feel far from God – guess who moved?” Well, it certainly wasn’t God. He is the same “yesterday, and today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) It is up to us to work at sewing up those loose ends and securely attaching ourselves to the Lord. We do so by studying His Word, spending time in prayer and meditation, fellowshipping with other Christians who are also striving to live their lives in such a way that heaven will be their home. We grow by joining in with our church family to worship.

While I had the needle and thread out, I decided to tighten all the buttons! You can’t be too careful! God Bless, Courtney
