The Greatest

Cassius Clay, also known as Muhammad Ali is widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time. In fact, his nickname was – “The Greatest.” P.T. Barnum is known as “The Greatest Showman” after gathering unique and exotic performers under one tent for the “Greatest Show on Earth” – the circus. Alexander, is considered to be such a great military leader, that he will forever go down in history as Alexander, the Great. You can find lists for the greatest movies, musicians, books, and actors. Politicians, philanthropists, and athletes can be considered “great” in their field, but this week my view of what’s “great” has changed. For my Weekly Scripture Writing, I’m on Schedule 1.12 – Week 3, with the topic “Greatest.”

The memory verses are Matthew 22:37-38 – “Jesus said unto him, ‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.”‘ I Corinthians 13:13 says, “Now abideth these three: faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love.” James 3:5 warns us about the dangers of the tongue, “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things; See how great a forest a little fire kindles.” The “great fire of Chicago” was started by one spark. In Luke 22:24-26, the disciples were arguing over who would be accounted as the greatest – Jesus told them, “He that is the greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.” “Whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister.” (Matthew 20:26) Let him serve others.

I love the song, “Make Me a Servant.” It goes like this – “Lord, make me a servant. Lord, make me like you. For you are a servant – Make me one, too. Lord, make me a servant. Do what You must do. To make me a servant – Make me like You.” Sometimes, I believe that the Lord puts us on our backs – so that we can look up. Perhaps, we needed to be reminded Who is truly the Greatest. He’s the one that we should strive to “follow in His steps.” (I Peter 2:21) When we suffer through things, may we “rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for GREAT is your reward in heaven.” (Matthew 5:12) By the way, “Today is a great day to have a great day!” God Bless, Courtney
