This morning I was privileged to attend a Ladies’ Day at the Stokes Church of Christ. When I walked in, one of the ladies said, “Well, now the Doniphan church is represented!” I smiled and told her how glad I was that everything worked out for me to attend. But her words got me to thinking – would others form their opinions on how friendly or how sound the Doniphan Church of Christ is by how I acted in the next three hours? Wow! What kind of “representative” are you?
A representative is one who is chosen or appointed to act or speak for the group. The word Christian means “a follower of Christ.” We are to be “Christ-like.” Would Jesus go the places that you go? Are you “following in His steps?” (I Peter 2:21) His steps led to teaching those who were lost, helping those who were sick, and comforting those who had lost loved ones. Are you representing Christ in the world by the way you treat others? He said, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. But this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” (John 13:34-35) As the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31:26, do you “open your mouth with wisdom and in your tongue is the law of kindness?”
Paul told the church at Colosse, “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.” (Colossians 3:17) Then, he goes on to say “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” (Colossians 3:23) Are your words and deeds “Christ-like?” How well do you represent the body of Christ? What impression of the church do others get from you?
May we take our responsibility as a representative of the church seriously. You might be the only Bible, others will ever read. God Bless, Courtney
