How Are You Listening?

Our hearts are broken tonight with the news of the passing of a dear friend of ours, Tim Wilkes, Sr. Tim and Steve attended the Memphis School of Preaching in the early 80s. We were all newlyweds at the time. We’ve kept up with Tim and Lynn through his life’s work – teaching Christians to teach others through personal evangelism classes. Tim was the director of the Fishers of Men Ministry.

Tim came to Doniphan many times through the years – the last time was last fall, October, 2018. Even though his health was not what it once was, he was still traveling, teaching Fishers of Men classes and preaching. One of the things that I’ve thought of throughout the past year was after a particularly good sermon one night, I half-jokingly told Tim, “Boy, you sure stepped on my toes tonight!” He looked at me, dead-panned and responded, “I was aiming for your heart!” Wow! I just stood there and looked at him. How many times do we hear something or read something that makes us feel a little uncomfortable, but then, we shrug it off. Do you listen to God’s Word with your heart? Listening with your heart will lead to some “soul searching.” It will lead you to study the Scriptures, meditate on His Word, and pray for forgiveness. It will result in a reformation of life.

While I may not remember the exact sermon that he preached that night, I’ll never forget the lesson that I learned. Tim, thank you. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lynn and his family. Heaven is a little dearer tonight. May we always listen with our hearts. God Bless, Courtney
