Do any of y’all remember the public safety ad song written by Richard Trentlage from years ago when it became a law to use seatbelts, that went, “Buckle up for safety, Buckle up. Buckle up for safety, always buckle up. Show the world you care, use it everywhere, Buckle up for safety, Always buckle, buckle up!” Mother and I were reminiscing about this little ditty last weekend as I helped fasten her seat belt – it was hard for her to click it with a cast on her arm. Then, that night I thought of it again as I buckled Aiden in his booster seat. He has been buckled up in the car his whole life and will never think twice about whether or not he should “buckle up.” He would feel “lost” without it.
This got me to wondering – what can we use to keep “safe” in our spiritual lives. We know that Peter warned us in I Peter 5:8 that we should “be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary, the devil walks about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” We are being “stalked.” How can we “buckle up for safety? Friends, we must do as the Psalmist did when he explained, “Thy Word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against Thee.” (Psalm 119:11) The world tells us to panic and worry, but The Word reminds us, “For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” (I Timothy 8:7) Man stumbles in the dark, but through the Word, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world; he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12) To be “safe” in the hereafter, we must “set our minds on things above, and not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2) We must put on the whole armor of God, using that “sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God, to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11)
If we practice “writing on our hearts every Word,” it will become second nature to us, just like buckling up. We can’t help, but “show the world we care and use it everywhere.” Buckle up for safety, for we will truly be “lost” without it. God Bless, Courtney
