Silence? What’s That?

So sorry that it’s been a few days since I’ve written a blog. My excuse is one word – Aiden! I’ve been blessed to have my grandson here for a few days. We have played many games of air hockey. We practiced riding his bike without training wheels, (It’s been a long time since I ran beside a bicycle! Whew!),and we bought new fish for Gammy’s aquarium. It has been quite a week – one of the best weeks of my life. But now that he’s gone – I’m experiencing “the sound of silence.” To say that he “likes to talk is an understatement.” lol His mom was the same way, so I guess she is getting paid back for her raising! But, it’s his vocabulary that blows me away. PaPaw got him two magnets, so yesterday, he was doing science experiments. He came to me and said, “Gammy, my hypothesis is true . . . ” “Hypothesis?” He’s SEVEN! God bless his new second grade teacher! Anyway, back to today – it’s quiet in here!

Do you enjoy being in silence? I happen to be one of those people who rarely turn the TV on, if I’m home alone. I don’t have a problem with it being quiet. In fact – I LOVE IT! My calendar the other day said, “Silence is often misunderstood, but it’s never misquoted.” Isn’t that great? There are many times when it really is better “to say nothing at all.” Solomon said, “A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards” (Proverbs 29:11). Yes, “Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding” (Proverbs 17:28). I’ve always heard that it’s better to keep your mouth shut and let someone think that you’re a fool, then open it and PROVE IT!

But, it really is good for us to spend some time in silence. Lamentations 3:26 says, “It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.” We are told to, “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalms 46:10) Yes, Habakkuk reminds us that “the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him” (Habakkuk 2:20). We need to spend some time in silence, meditating on the glory and power of God; thinking about His Word, and thanking Him for all of the things that we’ve been blessed with here on this earth. May you enjoy the “sound of silence” today, for, oh how we are “simply blessed,” Courtney

  1. It’s the best thing to just sit quietly…maybe outdoors watching a beautiful sunset….admiring the fall colors….even watching in awe the haunting wonder of a late-evening thunderstorm….and just think about the majesty and power of God and His magnificence. Just get off to yourself….your favorite spot…just sit quietly and take in God’s majesty.
