Are You Smart?

At first when I read this quote, I thought, “Wow! That’s profound!” Let’s see what you think – “It’s not about being ready when the time comes, it’s when the time comes, being ready.” So? Yeah, well, I pondered and pondered and guess what I think – they’re the same thing! This is redundant and stupid statement! Yet, it had me fooled for a while because it sounded smart. You know?

I’ve decided we are often fooled by things that “sound” smart. In II Timothy 4:3, Paul told Timothy, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;” People haven’t changed in the last two centuries, have they? Some have been known to pick and choose which part of the scriptures they will follow – according to their own desires. And they don’t like to be told that what they believe is not what the Bible says. So they “church shop” until they find someone who agrees with them. They look for ministers who have high degrees – they must be smarter, right? But think about the men that Jesus chose to be his apostles – fishermen? tax collectors? They were willing to follow Jesus. And that, my Friends, is what makes us smart.

May we search the scriptures as the Bereans, who “received the Word with all readiness of mind and searched the scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11). Be smart! Simply Blessed, Courtney
