In Luke 5, we read about Jesus changing a man’s life by choosing Matthew to be one of His apostles. Luke wrote, “And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. And he left all, rose up, and followed him. And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them. But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?” (Luke 5:27-30). Did you notice what Jesus actually did? He sat with sinners. He didn’t SIN with them. There is a difference!
How will sinners learn the errors of their ways? In Acts 8, the Spirit urged Phillip to join himself to the chariot. “And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him” (Acts 8:30-31). Phillip had to approach this man in order to teach him. We also must reach out to others, starting right where they are and teach them about Jesus and His church.
