To God and Back

Last week when Aiden was at our house, we had a conversation that I can’t forget. For years, I’ve been telling him, “I love you to the moon and back!” I even bought him a little sign for his bedroom with that quote. Well, not too long ago, when I’d say, “I love you to the moon and back,” he’d say, Well, I love you to the sun and back- cause that’s farther!” And we’d just smile at each other. Last week, I thought I’d trick him, so I started with, “I’ll love YOU to the sun and back!” He looked at me very seriously and answered, “Gammy, I love you to God and back!” This caught me off guard and I said, “What?” He replied, God lives in heaven which is above the moon and the sun – He’s everywhere!”

I’ll be honest – I didn’t know what to say at first. In fact, I’ve pondered his response for over a week. Wow! From the mouth of babes – or at least of a 5 year old, I was reminded about the power of God. He IS everywhere! He sees us when we’re lonely. He watches over us when we’re sick. He cares about us in the “tough times” in our lives. In Acts 7, while Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was being stoned to death, we are given a glimpse of heaven when Stephen cried, “I see the heavens open and the Son of Man standing at the right side of God.” (Acts 7:56). I love that description. You know how at ballgames, when the score is close, everybody stands up for a better view? That’s how I picture Jesus – when Stephen really needed Him, He was standing over him. I believe there have been some hard times in my life, when the Lord was standing over me – to encourage me to be strong and remind me that I’m never alone. He’s always there for me!
